When to See A Dermatologist
Dermatologists are experts in the field of skin care. They have so many years of education and training in this, that they surpass that of some highly specialized medical personnel in other fields, depending on the country they practice in. They specialize in acne treatments and severe acne. You may not always agree with them, and you may want to seek a second opinion, and that’s okay. Consider seeing one if any of the following are a problem:
- none of the over-the-counter treatments have worked even though you’ve followed the instructions completely.
- you have acne scars developing
- you have nodules filled with pus, and are painful.
- a dark patch develops on the skin after an acne lesion clears up.
- your acne has changed your quality of life, i.e. you are embarrassed all the time and shy because of your skin’s appearance.
- you are having acne develop suddenly from medication.
- you have moles that your doctor wants examined more closely by a dermatologist.
Did you know that dermatologists don’t just treat acne, but they also treat hair loss, nail problems, moles, cold sores, warts, rashes, hives and athletes foot, skin cancer treatments, and cosmetic dermatology.
Depending on where you live, the waiting time to see a dermatologist can be many months. In Canada alone, about 72,000 cases of skin cancer were diagnosed last year. That is just in Canada. Imagine the stats for the U.S. So if you are needing to see a dermatologist, don’t put off booking yourself in. You can always cancel beforehand if you find a treatment that works, but in the meantime, you’ll have the assurance that your opportunity with the good doctor will be sooner rather than later.
