The Liver and Our Skin

Consider this – what if we’re focusing too much on topical treatments and not enough on the “what goes in must come out” aspect of blackheads. Toxins inside our bodies are also working their way through the blood stream that provides nutrition to our skin. Nasty. The liver is the only organ that can clean the blood stream. Those toxins, together with the sebum, form a thick substance that clogs pores, thus resulting in blackheads and whiteheads, not to mention other forms of acne. And where you might ask are the largest pores on our face? The area around the nose and forehead called the T-zone. Yes, I am vulnerable right there to blackheads, especially around the nose where the most oil glands are. In our quest for the best skin care, clearing our body of toxins is one of the most important steps to helping us rid blackheads from our lovely faces.

Toxins store in our liver and the liver is where we target cleanup, so although we may seem to be working backwards, we are working towards clear skin from the root up. The liver, which by the way is the largest organ in the body, helps balance hormones and cleans blood from toxins, amongst many other functions. The hormonal imbalance that many people deal with (probably most people) shows up on our skin. The liver breaks up substances to be excreted such as alcohol, medications, waste, and it is also a filter to remove dead cells and micro-organisms from our system.

I noticed that there is a site promoting help with acne by buying their first product that is reduced to 37.00 but will be going up to 90 something dollars in the future. Once purchased, there is a lot of informative reading but also many costly products to purchase to help clear up the liver. I am suggesting for those not able or willing to shell out that much extra for an experiment while eating like a pauper, to work on the liver with other natural methods.

I somehow doubt that with zero pollutions penetrating our bodies and soil rich in minerals that used to nourish our produce so well, that skin ailments were an issue. But apart from that, there is a lot of natural foods to help us internally detoxify the liver while we also are trying that topical treatment. Fasting will only provide a temporary measure, but to keep our bodies functioning and cleaning properly we need to work on what we put in as much as what we leave out.  And did I mention it is one of the best anti-wrinkle treatments you can do for your skin? Even reverse skin damage?

Foods and herbs that help detoxify the liver: Beetroot, milk thistle, dandelion, wheatgrass, celergy and carrot all in raw juices when possible and eaten fresh. If we don’t have access to raw juices or making them, start eating a variety of these foods fresh and organic when feasible. Green leafy vegetables, alfalfa sprouts, legumes such as lentils, beans and peas, nuts and seeds, wheatgerm, preferably not the toasted kind. Essential fatty acids including fish oil, seafood, cod liver oil, cold-pressed oils found at the health food store such as flax seed oil, evening primrose oil, fresh nuts, seeds, and vegetables such as green beans and green peas – fresh, contain essential fatty acids.

You can stop thinking that the lowest no-fat diet in your system is going to help your liver, because the liver and our cells needs essential fatty acids to function properly. Aim for antioxidant mineral Selenium, found in black strap molasses, brewer’s yeast, kept, whole grains, garlic, onion and again wheatgerm. Some natural sulphur compounds we need for our liver are found in garlic and onions again, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, shallots, and cabbage.
